Mwasi Tshombo (Femme téléphone)

Performance by artist-in-residence Nada Tshibwabwa at the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren

©Nada Tshibwabwa

Nada Tshibwabwa uses waste materials as raw material for his performance costumes. The costume for Mwasi Tshombo is made from telephone debris. Inspired by the social rebalancing functions of ancestral costumes and contemporary modes of communication, Nada Tshibwabwa questions our relationship with the environment and the price of the digital revolution. The DRCongo is the richest country in coltan on the planet. Coltan is necessary for the manufacture of cell phones, computers, etc. This coveted raw material is at the root of inhumane mining conditions and ruthless wars in Eastern Congo, reflecting not only a long colonial history, but also our complicity in the over-consumption of resources and the pollution of our environment. Mwasi Tshombo brings these issues to life in her appearances. The AfricaMuseum (Tervuren, Belgium) has invited Nada Tshibwabwa to a residency from February 14 to May 7, 2022 on the theme of ecological knowledge as part of this project.
