Programme 'Extinctions!?' Spring 2023

The collections of the Weltmuseum Wien contain objects that can be used to tell stories about the extinction of human cultures, but which also talk about their resilience and survival. In collaboration with partners from Latin America in particular, this exhibition Extinctions!? questions common narratives of extinction and retells them from other perspectives. It grows and changes through workshops and insights and ideas from our visitors. Gelatine Gold Plating for Children

Workshop for children
Fri, 17 November, 3.30 pm

The Romans already used gold-plating with gelatine. The intermediate gold glasses (fondi d’oro) discovered in the catacombs of Rome in late antiquity are impressive proof of the stability of this gilding technique. It is suitable for all smooth, non-absorbent surfaces and is mainly used for reverse glass gilding.

In the workshop we will show how to make the gilding medium, how to apply gold leaf and how to work out a pattern. All participants can make their own piece.
Please bring empty jam jars (medium size).

Duration: 90 min
Admission: € 10 / € 9 with the Annual Family Ticket (entrance to zam is free)
Tickets are available online or at the box office, while stocks last
Meeting place: Hall of Columns

Exhibition talk on the new participatory exhibition space

zam is a space for collaboration. We will address current and relevant questions in partnership with societies of origin, remembrance groups, communities, and visitors. These questions are developed, designed and presented together in different forms. zam is a place where people listen to each other, talk to each other and share experiences. It is a place, where we rethink roles in the museum: curators become sources, communities of origin tell their own stories, visitors curate. zam is not just an exhibition space. It is a production site where work processes become visible and can be experienced. In this talk with Nora Haas, we would like to introduce you to the space and our first zam exhibition, Extinctions?! We invite you to ask questions and to enter into an exchange with us. zam is FREE for all visitors and can be visited ANY TIME during museum opening hours!

Talk with Grandparents for Future

Thu, 4 May, 1.30 pm

We invite you to a talk with the Grandparents For Future. Our guest is Ursula Berger, who has been actively involved in the group since 2020. The framework for the conversation is the exhibition Extinctions!?. In light of the ongoing climate crisis and its impact on biodiversity, questions of threats to future life on our planet and fears of loss are at the center of public discourse. In the wake of the Anthropocene, a sixth major species extinction is expected.

© GrandparentsForFuture

Who are the Grandparents For Future? They write about themselves:

"Fridays for Future is a youth movement. However, despite our advanced age, we have decided to become a little active within this movement. We grew up in a time when after the war there was a great reconstruction and a dawning of a new era. Everything seemed technically possible, resources were not an issue and air pollution certainly not. In the meantime, the general conditions have changed completely. Sustainability, resource conservation and climate neutrality have become the decisive issues of our time. As numerous calculations show, we all do not have much time left to avert the predicted climate catastrophe. We may not live to see this catastrophe, but for the sake of our grandchildren and future generations, it is important for us to act."

Dying Craft: Trousseau Seam Stressing

Workshop for adults with Renee Karger

Fri, 26 May, 11 am

Do you know the profession of the trousseau seamstress or as it is called in German “Weißnäherin”? It is a profession that has almost died out due to social and societal developments. It was not so long ago that a woman tying the knot was provided with a lavish dowry. This was primarily bed linen, towels, tablecloths and so on. Since the trousseau was mostly made of white fabrics, it was also commonly referred to as white linen and that is why it the profession is called “Weißnähen” in German. If sheets, tablecloths and the like were sewn before the wedding, some families allowed themselves the luxury of a trousseau seamstress. The seamstress then helped the women to prepare the trousseau.

Renee Karger still learned the profession of trousseau seam stressing in her apprenticeship and she would like to pass on this knowledge. At the workshop we will first learn about fabrics: how to recognize natural fabrics, plain weave, cotton, silk, linen? And then it's time for action: we will try out different types of seams and decorative stitches. Working materials will be provided.

If you yourself practice a craft that you would like to pass on to protect it from becoming forgotten, contact us at kulturvermittlung@weltmuseumwien.at.
